Radnicki, Pro Recco, Primorje group winners

The first group to concluded its Champions League second round matches was group D in Kragujevac, Serbia where hosts Radnicki completed a successful weekend topping the standings thanks to three straight wins after the Serbs defeated Posillipo 9-5 on Sunday. Szolnok made sure to finish second beating Turkish opponent Yuzme Istanbul 11-17 behind Marton Vamos' 5 goals so that both Radnicki and Szolnok have qualified for the 3rd and play-off qualification round with Radnicki awaiting a second-place opponent of the other group while Szolnok is yet to learn one of other group winners as their final hurdle before the preliminary phase starts. One of that other group's first place sides surely is Pro Recco who completed their unbeaten run in the second round by dominating Red Star Belgrade 17-6 in Hannover to top group A. Pietro Figlioli led all scorers with 4 for the Italian favourites in a one-sided affair. The battle for second place got a surprising turn when Spartak Volgograd defeated hosts Waspo 98 Hannover 10-14 to creat a three-way tie and eventually having the youngsters of Red Star Belgrade securing the 2nd spot thanks to a better goal scoring difference. Their '-2' proved better than the couple of othe teams' -12. And with Spartak winning their head-to-head meeting 10-14 on Sunday, the Russian reigning Euro Cup champions are back in that tournament in a shot to defend their title this season. In group C, in Zagreb, Croatia, Jadran Herceg Novi did what they could to keep a possible 2nd place finish in sight topping Marseille 9-6 so that the result of the Mladost-Primorje match-up will determine the pair of teams to advance to the 3rd round. It proved favourable for both of the Croatian favourites as Primorje used a comeback in the final period to edge their rivals 6-7 to finish 1st unbeaten while Mladost completed a nice weekend joining Primorje into the third qualification round as they goal difference (0) proved better than Jadrans' -4 so that the Vladimir Gojkovic coached squad will continue their European adventure in the Euro Cup tournament.Radnicki vs. Posillipo
Radnicki concluded the Champions League second round with another victory on the final day against Posillipo 9-5. The important victory came after a somewhat weak performance, as the Italians missed red carded captain Valentino Gallo on an already weakened team due to stomach flu and injury problems.

Due to that reasons there was only seven players in rotation of the Italian team which resulted that most of players were in the pool every second of the game. In spite of that Posilipo started strongly and after 5 minutes of play made 3-0 lead. Radnicki struggled to find rhythm and goalkeeper Tommaso Negri was in form to stop attempts and put some nervous in the Radnicki shooters.

But a lack of concentration in the final seconds of the first and second quarter cost the Naples base side their lead at half-time (5-5). And in second half Posillipo resisted but due to lack of players could not avoid the defeat. Milos Milicic continued his good form and for the second game in row top scored with 3 goals, Marko Cuk added two while Aleksandar Radovic netted 3 as well for visitors.

Mladost, OSC win thrillers

The second day of action during the Champions League 2nd round weekend saw OSC and Mladost winning absolute thrilling encounters with the Hungarian side close to group win after collecting their second straight victory. At home the talented Sintez Kazan squad took a 1-2 lead at quarter-time before OSC waited until the final period to turn things around. Led by Ferenc Salamon (pictured) and Miklos Gor-Nagy, who scored 3 each, the Hungarians used a 5-goal performance in the 4th term to establish the lead which proved decisive as OSC topped Sintez Kazan 13-12. And after Romanian champions CSM Oradea defeated ASC Duisburg 15-11 behind 5 goals from Tiberiu Negrean, the first place in the group for the hosts seems more or less confirmed. Duisburg will be the weekend's final opponent on Sunday. Meanwhile Mladost won another thriller at home in group C as they knocked off Marseille 11-10 after standout Andrija Basic scored the winner with just under 5 seconds remaining. A bitter defeat for the French who came out ready to play and were superior in the first half leading 2-5 at half-time. However in the third session Mladost got back into it and eventually walked away with their first win after yesterday's 7-all draw with Jadran. Primorje meanwhile marched on in another clear win facing Jadran Herceg Novi on Saturday. The favourites quickly took a 3-0 lead and never looked back to win 11-4. Sandro Sukno netted 4 to take top scoring honours. An all important Sunday will see the battle for 2nd place being determined as Mladost takes on domestic rivals Primorje while Jadran Herceg Novi meets Marseille. A resurrection was on display in Hannover, Germany where Red Star, after falling to hosts Waspo 12-11 on Friday, simply dominated Russian champs Spartak Volgograd just a day later. With top scorer Strahinja Rasovic again going off, this time for 5 goals, the young Serbian side rolled away from the second quarter onwards and posted a convincing 4-14 win for their first points of the weekend. Pro Recco made no mistake facing hosts Waspo 98 Hannover. The German home side was held scoreless in the opening quarter as the Igor Milanovic coached side walked even further away in a one-sided second half to eventually win 5-14 with young gun Francesco di Fulvio ending up top scorer with 4. As expected the Italians with this win pretty much secured the top spot in the group and a favourable draw for the next 3rd (play-off) round. First up however is the group's final match-up, with Red Star Belgrade, on Sunday morning. Recco eliminated then title-holders Red Star in last year's play-off round on penalties over 2 matches. In group D Szolnok recovered from their stunning defeat on Friday as they ousted Posillipo 14-4 in a rebound performance. Daniel Varga and Stefan Mitrovic (3 each) led the way for Szolnok who is in the race to avoid an early elimination by claiming 2nd place behind Radnicki and started off well beating the Italian opponents. On Sunday the Hungarians will meet Turkish outsider Yuzme Istanbul in an encounter that will likely confirm Szolnok's 2nd spot in the group.

Radnicki vs. Yuzme Istanbul
The second round of Champions league qualification continued Saturday in Kragujevac and the local boys from Radnicki had an easy task against Yuzme Ihtisas with a blowout victory as a result: 18-3.

On the wings of the huge victory against Szolnok on Friday Radnicki capitalized the momentum and good form to overcome the visitors. The Turkish team was involved just in the opening minutes taking a lead at 1-0, 2-1, but after that wasn't able to score for nearly 30 minutes. On the other side the versatile home players used pressure in defence and multiple counter attacks to finish the game before half-time. Stefan Zivojinovic was in the Radnicki goal replacing usual starter Zdravko Radic and managed to stop two penalty shots to further lower Yuzme’s selfconfidence.

On offence Boris Popovic had a good game from the outside line, away from his usual centre-forward position scoring twice and assisting, too. Srdjan Vuksanovic and Milos Milicic top scored with five each.

Szolnok vs. Posillipo

Szolnok proved too strong for Posilipo in the second round of Champions League qualification with an easy 14-4 victory. The Hungarian vice-champions bounced back from Friday’s defeat against Radnicki to secure the final round as they in the last match play with outsiders Yuzme early Sunday.

Szolnok was up from the beginning, and goalie Victor Nagy was in form to leave the Naples based side without a goal for 10 minutes. With a 4-goal lead into the third quarter finish Posillipo captain Valentino Gallo was red carded for brutality when he unintentionally hit Denes Varga in the face after a struggle. With four minutes extra man Szolnok easily concluded the game with a big margin.

Centre-forward Gabor Kis was the main strength for the Hungarians in the beginning of the match before the outside line took over with Daniel Varga and Stefan Mitrovic scoring three each. Vincenzo Iodice Renzuto manage to score two for the Italians.

Radnicki stuns Szolnok

The Champions League second round opening day matches saw a highlight being made in Kragujevac, Serbia where the hosts stunned red-hot favourites Szolnok 12-10 for a kick-start of their tournament. Newly acquired Marko Cuk led the way for the home team scoring 3 goals while Denes Varga finished as the game's top scorer with 4. In the opening match in central Serbia Posillipo defeated Turkish representative Yuzme Istanbul 6-14 in a solid performance. Meanwhile in Budapest the expected favourites made no mistake as Sintez Kazan kicked things off by beating ASC Duisburg in a high-scoring encounter 10-17 followed by home side OSC coming out firing for a quick 5-0 lead to eventually top CSM Oradea 12-7 in front of the home crowd. In group A in Hannover, Germany title favorites Pro Recco did what was expected although the dominance with which last year's Euro Cup winners Spartak Volgograd were downed was convincing: 8-14. Home side Waspo made their first but big step towards a 3rd-place finish as they edged Serbian opponents Red Star Belgrade, thanks to strong performances from veteran Predrag Jokic, Marko Bolovic (3 goals each) and a superior 3rd quarter in which the Germans secured the close victory. In group C, in Zagreb, Primorje lived up to the expectations as they proved too strong for Marseille who suffered from a 6-2 setback in the opening period as well as the final quarter for the 17-8 win. Sandro Sukno earned top scoring honours scoring 4 goals while Damir Buric and Petar Muslim added 3 for the winners. Alexandre Camarasa produced the same offence for Marseille who will face hosts Mladost on Saturday.

Radnicki vs. Szolnok

Early in the Champions league qualification second round a vital game was played in Kragujevac where home team Radnicki stunned the star-filled squad of Szolnok 12-10. Last year's Champions League runners-up, with a changed roster, managed to take control from the start of an atomic first quarter. The aggressive and motivated players of Radnicki found good rhythm in attack early on and quickly sent Viktor Nagy (Attila Decker substituting) to the bench with six goals in his net already in the first quarter. Newcomer Josip Vrlic proved to be an important addition for Radnicki as he put weight in front of the goal and earned multiple exclusions. Team effort and a good organisation of the extra man opportunities took Radnicki 3-0 in front, after only 3 minutes of play. Then Szolnok started to respond mainly through the brothers Daniel and Denes Varga. But Radnicki was already on a roll and continued to score for the big 5-1, and eventually 6-3 score after eight minutes.

The game can prove to be one of the most important of season as it opens the way to CL group stage avoiding top teams such as Pro Recco or Primorje who are hot favourites to win their respective groups. Exactly that importance started to show on the stands and in the pool as the game started to be more physhical with fans feeling the moment and cheering the home boys. Vetaran Aleksandar Ciric and Nikola Dedovic emerged as main Radnicki forces on defence with goalkeeper Zdravko Radic keeping watch on the Varga's and limiting their impact on the game to reasonable extent.

Still the quality of Hungarian team sparkled from time to time and Szolnok after trailing 9-5 at half-time manage to come close enough to turned things around. But Radnicki managed to respond with strong defence, and a couple of goals. More experienced players such as Filip Trajkovic and Marko Cuk stepped up on deciding moments with crucial goals. Still, it was the team effort both on both ends of the pitch that brought the victory to the Uros Stevanovic coached side.

Cuk was top scorer for home side with three goals, Trajkovic and Dedovic added two while Denes Varga earned top scoring honours with four goals.

Can favourites deliver in Champions League 2nd round?

In group B hosts OSC are likely to take the top spot, especially since playing in front of their own fans the entire weekend. Toughest opposition can be expected to come from Romanian champs CSM Oradea and Russian runners-up Sintez Kazan. German number two Duisburg looks to have the objective of fighting for a possible 3rd-place finish in order to continue in the Euro Cup tournament. But with an ever-tough Oradea squad that includes Serbian national team goalie Gojko Pijetlovic, fellow Serb centre-forward Milos Korolija and winger Marko Avramovic, added with shooters Tiberiu Negrean and Ramiro Georgescu, and the talented Russian Sintez Kazan squad, OSC knows where they are up to in their quest of topping the group and qualify for round 3. Kazan and Oradea already met in the round 1 qualification group B where the Russians ended up victorious 11-8 in the head-to-head match-up.

The teams and match-ups in group C will have the local fans excited. Here home side Mladost, in recent good form, face Croatian champs Primorje, French powerhouse Marseille and Montenegrin Jadran Herceg Novi. Two-time Adriatic league winners Primorje are the huge favourites, even more after their dominant 8-2 victory over Mladost in last weekend's Regional league 2nd round. But the battle for the 2nd spot in the group could turn out to be an exciting one with Mladost, Marseille and Jadran all fierce and legitimate contenders. Mladost dominated Jadran in Herceg Novi in the previous round as they went on to complete a perfect 5-0 record that weekend in Montenegro beating the then home side 5-13. Now coming off an 11-7 win over Red Star Belgrade at home in Herceg Novi in the Regional league 3rd round last Tuesday, Jadran will have a shot at showing that earlier 8-goal defeat does not display the level difference of the two sides. Primorje meanwhile will be in action on Wednesday, a day later then fellow Champions League participants also active in the Regional league, when they visit Partizan in Belgrade on the occasion of the Regional league 3rd round

And finally group D, played in Kragujevac, where Radnicki ensured themselves of some nice international matches in front of the home crowd with Champions League title contender Szolnok, Italian Posillipo and Turkish outsider Yuzme as the opponents. Szolnok obviously is the red-hot favourite, not only to top this group but even to make to the Champions League Final Six final, late May in Barcelona. The super squad, who landed Norbert Madaras and the Varga brothers back in Hungary this summer, are expecting nothing but a clean sheet this weekend with the Serbian trio of Zivko Gocic, Stefan Mitrovic and Milan Aleksic visiting their home country. Home side Radnicki will be looking to join the Hungarians into the final play-off 3rd round and know Posillipo is likely to be their main contender for that second spot. The Italians however are not experiencing their finest form, most recently falling to Canottieri Napoli 8-6, in the Italian league 3rd round on Tuesday. And there's the danger of underestimating an outsider like Yuzme. The ambitious Turks will have no pressure and could complete an upset by winning just one match.

Champions League second round draw

|Monday 29 September 2014, 12:49|Tim Hartog

The draw for the second round of the Champions League, conducted on Monday at the LEN office in Luxembourg, unveiled some interesting match-ups in the battle for the top 2 spots in the groups in order to advance to the play-off round 3. Four groups of four teams will be played around Europe from 17-19 October. In Hannover, Germany one of the title favorites Pro Recco will square off with Red Star Belgrade once again. The Italians knocked out the 2012 European champions in last year's play-off round but for now will see a different opponent as Red Star's squad was significantly rejuivenated during last summer. With Spartak Volgograd in the group however, the favorite to join Recco in the available spots for round 3 is mentioned.  OSC will be hosting group B where Germany runners-up Duisburg, Russian runners-up Sintez Kazan and Romanian champions CSM Oradea thus making the home side one of the favorites to clinch either one of the two top spots in the group. Group C sees Croatian champion Primorje joining fellow Croatian and still unbeaten side Mladost in facing Jadran Herceg Novi and Marseille as an interesting battle for the second spot could be ahead of us although Mladost showed great form in round 1 winning 5 out of 5 matches. Group D will second title favorite Szolnok facing hosts Radnicki, Italians Posillipo and Turkish newcomers Yuzme Istanbul in what is likely to be come a nice battle for the second spot behind the heavily favorite Hungarians.
