Marc Minguell: "Este grupo está igualadísimo"

Marc Minguell:

Pro Recco dominate in Eger

One of the top match-ups on day 2 of the Champions League turned out to be a display of dominance by Pro Recco who confirmed their title-contending status in this year's Champions League by holding ambitious Hungarian champions ZF-Eger to scoring just 4 goals in a 4-12 victory in Hungary on Wednesday for their 2nd straight triumph. In another balanced offensive performance 8 different players contributed goals with Maro Jokovic, Andrea Fondelli, Dusko Pijetlovic and Andrija Prlainovic netting 2 each for the Italian champions who are now holding a firm grip on the top position in group A. In Piraeus, Greece home side Olympiacos followed up their single point from day 1 with three more on Wednesday knocking off Radnicki 13-7 in a convincing performance. Shooter Ioannis Fountoulis and centre-forward Konstantinos Mourikis led the charge with 3 goals each for the winning Greeks.

Meanwhile in group B, leaders Szolnok made no mistake in Berlin facing Spandau who proved a legitimate contender pushing Jug to a close finish in their match-up on day 1. Hosting Szolnok however proved to be a different story. The favourite Hungarians dominated from the start and cruised to a 7-17 blowout win. Marton Toth topped the scorers list with a game-high 5 goals while Denes Varga added 4 for the visitors. Primorje followed the example gaining their first win of the prelims in Istanbul, Turkey. Galatasaray were held to scoring 4 goals while the Croatian champions, led by centre-forward Cosmin Radu's 3 goals walked away to the easy six-goal victory: 4-10. In the final match of the day on Wednesday Jug collected their 2nd victory beating Partizan in Belgrade 3-5 in low-scoring affair. The home side could not score in the entire first half and eventually only managed to find the back of the next behind Jug goalie Marko Bijac three times, in the third period only, when Dusan Mandic erupted for 3 goals including 1 penalty shot. On the other end Jug had already scored thrice in the first half and just needed two answers in the third term to secure a comfortable win. Nikola Janovic finished as top scorer for Jug netting 2 shots.

On Thursday day 2 was concluded as Barceloneta and Brescia drew level in Barcelona 7-7 after yet another close match-up. The encounter looked to be decided in the home team's favour as they got up in front on two ocassion in the 4th period through goals by Marc Roca and centre-forward Nemanja Ubovic. But Brescia's high-scoring veterans Valerio Rizzo and Guillermo Molina were there to respond and after the Spaniard's equalizer with 2.22 remaining no goals were scored anymore, despite the visitors from Italy having a chance to do so on man-up in the final seconds.

Mouthwatering clashes on day 2 of Champions League

Considering the situation and teams involved, all matches in group A this preliminary phase will be followed with even greater interest but day 2 of action in the Champions League this Wednesday, and Thursday, promise some mouthwatering clashes as well. The only side who managed to win on day 1, Pro Recco, has travelled to Eger where revitalised home side awaits. Eager for a successful campaign in Europe with a top team, finally after the previous years ended with dissapointment despite the success that Eger has in the domestic competition. The teams met in last year's Champions League prelims as well with Pro Recco confidently winning the match in Italy 14-9 but both teams have changed significantly.
Branislav Mitrovic, the Serbian goalkeeper of ZF-Eger said: “We are in a quite difficult series of matches. We played against Barceloneta, then Szolnok, eight of us appeared in the World League games in the Hungarian, Serbian and Montenegrin national teams, and on Saturday we beat FTC. Freshness can be crucial. Pro Recco is the world’s best team with amazing Serbian water polo players and a coach who knows how to win the Champions League. It would be a huge step ahead if we could beat them, and that is what we are planning to do. Our side features big names too, and we are getting better together as a team day by day. I think Eger can be the jolly joker team of this year’s Champions League series.”
“Our days are difficult nowadays: we play one match right after the other and many of us had to perform in their national teams, too” , said Balázs Erdélyi, who scored the equaliser in Barcelona 4 seconds before the end. “We’re working a lot, we even had practice on Sunday, despite the league game we had on Saturday. We are preparing ourselves against Recco, hoping that all these work we’ve done will not be in vain. When having a game here, at home, our goal is always victory, even if Pro Recco is the opponent. We are motivated enough, and aware of that our draw with Barceloneta will only worth something if we win on Wednesday.”

In the second group A match on Wednesday Olympiacos are seeking their first win when they host Radnicki who fell to Pro Recco on day 1 but will be looking to bounce back. The Serbs’ goalie, Zdravko Radic said: “Olympiacos has a bunch of great players. With the new faces, Mylonakis and Radjen, they are one of the favourites for the third spot for the Final Six but we want to qualify for the final stage, too. We have our own weapons and we have to use them to get three points.“

On Thursday reigning champions Barceloneta take on Brescia at home in another big match-up in group A. Despite Barceloneta already being qualified for the Final Six tournament they have proved to be ready to play and keep their 'champions' status up high. For Brescia the points are simply needed after a tough 9-9 draw with Olympiacos on day 1 have brought them just 1 point. Team’s captain and goalie Dani López said: “We face Thursday's game against Brescia as all games at this level: giving hundred percent in preparations to get the three points. Brescia is a competitive and very balanced team, even more than last year, with great players and that will make this one of the best games you can see in Europe. Hopefully we come out as winners.”

In group B meanwhile favourites Szolnok and Jug lived up to the expectation by winning on day 1 with Szolnok even doing so in favour of Primorje who are eager to use day 2 to get their first victory when they visit Galatasaray who will be in action for the first time after their day 1 match-up with Partizan was postponed. The Turkish powerhouse, who rely on the service of multiple strong Serbian and Montenegrin players, are well-known for being tough to beat at home. Primorje head coach Ivan Asic: “We have never played against Galatasaray, they are totally unknown team for us. Galatasaray is the team which has invested a lot in the last few years, so they deserve respect. We will face a strong opponent playing at home who will surely try to earn the points.“

Another interesting clash is the one featuring Partizan and Jug. Two of Europe's most sucessful teams ever will meet once again. It could have been a Champions League final in the previous decades but for now the situation has slightly changed. A young but talented Partizan side will give it their best at home against one of the teams who is expected to make it at least to the Final Six this season.  Jug’s captain, Niksa Dobud said: “Any result than a victory would be a failure. They are good, but we know our quality. If we can stop (Dusan) Mandic we will make a good job. Our advantage is lying in the position of the centre-forward, but they form a highly mobile team and apply tactics like no other teams. After the experience in Berlin we have to be aware of how we start the match.”

Finally in Berlin Spandau has the daunting task of hosting Szolnok, the heavy favourites in the group. But the Germans showed what they're capable of at home on day 1 when Jug survived a close battle winning just by a single-goal difference: 8-9. Szolnok is warned. The visitors are aware of Spandau’s abilities. “Every point has a great significance and away victories are even more appreciated” head coach Sándor Cseh said. “Our hosts will probably do their best in order to win this encounter. They have already proved against Dubrovnik that they could play superbly, they led by two goals but they messed up the last quarter. Still, in order to reach our goal we have to win in Berlin.”
Daniel Varga, Szolnok’s world and Olympic champion expects a really tough encounter: “The main frame of Spandau 04 is created by the players of the German national team and they have great Croatian and Serbian players as well. Moreover they have the great Laszlo Baksa, our Hungarian friend, who is their first goalkeeper. The head coach of Spandau 04 is the Montenegrin Petar Kovacevic so in their play they mix the German and Southern Slavish playing style. One thing is for sure: they will fight hard until the end and won’t give up. It’s going to be a hard test, especially playing away.”
