Champions League PR Day 3 14/01/15

Radnicki hangs on with win over Barceloneta

Radnicki are back in business in group A of the Champions League preliminary round. With just a win things now look a whole different for the Serbian side. In a re-match of last year's Champions League final reigning champions Barceloneta were defeated at home 12-7 in a convincing performance. The difference was made in the second half after both sides were levelled throughout the first pair of periods. Goals by Nikola Dedovic, Marko Cuk, Filip Trajkovic and, in a one-sided 4th quarter, Srdjan Vuksanovic, Marko Petkovic (ex Barceloneta) and Dusan Markovic decided the outcome in favour of the home side who used the exciting victory to give them a new perspective in the heavy competitive group A after being held pointless in the first 2 rounds of play. Barceloneta remains without a win after 3 rounds but thanks to 2 draws does not have to panic. In other results the group B matches caused no surprises. The favourites all won and therewith strenghtened their positions in the top half of the group. Primorje took control hosting Spandau early in the game and, powered by centre-forward Cosmin Radu (4 goals) and lefthander Xavi Garcia (3), did not let go. Jug, also playing at home, decided the outcome in a superior first-half performance already. With veterans Nikola Janovic and Paulo Obradovic leading the way scoring 4 each, the home side was not endangered by the Turkish champions in the remainder of the match as thet went on to post an 11-5 victory.

Szolnok hosted Partizan. The young Serbian side once again proved to be a tough opponent for any team this season. Szolnok got up ahead early but struggled to put the visitors away. Thanks to former Partizan player Milan Aleksic' 5 goals, with also ex-Partizan player Stefan Mitrovic adding 2, the patient home side decided things in the final quarter walking away to a solid 12-7 win.

In group A Eger picked up a more than welcome win in Italy where last year's Champions League number 5 Brescia was held to scoring just 3 goals in 3-7 win. A big third quarter and two consecutive goals by Serbian shooter Milos Cuk got the visitors in the driver's seat and ultimately decided the outcome. All of a sudden the Hungarians find themselves in 3rd place in group A now having gained 4 points after 3 rounds. For Brescia a home loss against Eger, who were last in the group before Wednesday will be a disspointment but with the close differences in the group, the fact that still 7 more rounds are to be played is a welcome fact.

Pro Recco took control of group A extending their unbeaten run to 3 games in Thursday's final match of day 3 at home against Olympiacos. The Greek champions managed to score 12 goals against one of the title favourites in Italy but had concede 17 goals themselves and therewith suffered a 17-12 defeat. Andrija Prlainovic led the winning squad in scoring netting 4 shots while Maro Jokovic and Pietro Figlioli added 3 each. Alexandros Gounas scored 4 for Olympiacos. As the only unbeaten side in group A Pro Recco enjoys a comfortable position well underway to Final Six qualification despite just having played 3 rounds so far. For Olympiacos still a, joint, 2nd place in the group is what they get from having gained 4 points in the first 2 matches.

All eyes on group A in Champions League

Day 3 of the Champions League preliminary round could already feature some decisions being made in group A. All teams will be involved in critical match-ups with the points more valuable than ever, despite the fact that we are just on day 3 of a total of 10. Pro Recco and Olympiacos will battle for the top spot in the group with the Italian champions having a legitimate shot at taking control of the group if they will manage to shake off the strong Greek side at home in Sori on Thursday. On Wednesday though two other pivotal matches will be played as Brescia hosts Eger and Barceloneta pays Radnicki a visit. Especially the Brescia-Eger match-up is one of severe importance. Both teams are destined to make their European campaign to a success but are on the verge of falling behind on the top 2 spots in the group. Eger just gained a point out of the first 2 rounds and could well use 3 more while Brescia, seemingly comfortable in 3rd place, hopes to follow both Olympiacos and Pro Recco to keep the group's 2d place in sight. For Radnicki the pressure is there as well. If they want to make something out of this Champions League season, a win at home against reigning European champions Barceloneta would be very helpful. The match-ups is a re-match of last year's Champions League final in Barcelona but the situation this season has well changed for Radnicki. However a young talented squad, still pointless after 2 rounds, is looking for upsets and has shown already to a tough group to beat, especially at home. But they will face an experienced Barceloneta side who are rolling once again in the domestic competition and despite already being qualified for the Final Six tournament which they for the 2nd time in succession will be hosting, are not backing down in the preliminary phase. After two successive 7-7 draw in the previous rounds, the reigning Spanish champions will be looking to pick up a first win in Serbia Wednesday.

In group B things are already starting to unraffle. The favourites have gained their points and on Wednesday will face the bottom 3 of the group. Daunting tasks for the three sides that are still seeking their first points. Even more considering the fact that Szolnok, Jug and Primorje will all be playing at home. German champions Spandau are battling to not fall behind early still looking for their first points after two matches while for Partizan and Galatasaray their postponed head-to-head day 1 match-up, to be played later this week, could prove to be of greater importance although both teams will be playing for points on Wednesday. Partizan are coming off a nice 10-8 win over Mladost Zagreb in the Regional league this weekend and therewith kicked off the year of 2015 in convincing fashion. The match against Szolnok in their water polo Arena however will be a different story. The Hungarian side has already confirmed its title-contending status and looks well underway to Final Six qualification after perfect start to the prelims with two wins. The same goes for Jug Dubrovnik who are hosting Galatasaray. The Turkish champion's roster hold plenty of talent for opponents to know they have to be taken seriously but never made it past the quarterfinals. In fact the 2012-2013 season in which they survived the group stage and knocked off Sintez Kazan 20-17 overall in the round of last 16 was the only team they made it to the final 8, where Jug Dubrovnik dominated the series 8-30 over 2 legs.
